Welcome to "ConnectM News"- the monthly newsletter from ConnectM.
In the recent union budget, the finance minister has set aside Rs 600 crore towards green initiatives and tackling climate change. The government has also launched an ambitious 10 year Green India mission. Towards this, the finance minister has allocated Rs 200 crore from the National Clean Energy Fund and the government will begin its implementation in 2011-12.

Elsewhere, the recent crisis in the middle east has led to a rise in energy costs, apart from other fallouts. Our article this month focuses on the rising costs of energy, and speaks about the need to use smarter systems for energy efficiency. We also take a brief look at how ConnectM is helping its clients in becoming more energy efficient.
We at ConnectM are focused on helping our clients go Green, and our solutions are tailored to address this endeavour of ours.
Hope you enjoy the read.

Rising Costs of Energy- needs a SMART response |
 |
|
The recent (and ongoing) crisis in the Middle East has once again brought into sharp focus our dependence on energy and the role it plays in affecting us in multiple ways. The global financial markets hit a low, which resulted in the share prices taking a dip, and a spurt in the price of oil. According to economist Nouriel Roubini, the spikes in energy prices related to wars or conflict in the Middle East preceded three of the last five global recessions (refer the graph below). The rising energy prices will also drive inflation and suppress growth.
Governments and companies across the world have now begun to understand the ever going importance of having smart systems, which will make the world more energy efficient and help in tacking the energy crisis by leading to more energy efficiency. Smart systems which also address the issue of pollution by providing green solutions are going to be much in demand in the coming days.
The situation in India
In February 2011, the Brent crude oil price reached more than USD 108 a barrel- the highest in over two-and-half years. Apart from rising crude prices and losses from selling diesel at subsidized rates, the refiners are also worried that a lingering payment crisis with Iran would choke about 12% of the Indian imports. According to some estimates, India imports about two-thirds of the oil it consumes. According to a government official, India had enough stocks of crude oil and refined products to last well into the beginning of April. Also, companies like Saudi Arabia, Abu Dhabi and Kuwait have enough capacity to quickly offset any loss of production from other countries.
The situation in the power sector has reached a critical level, as there is no coal available for new power projects coming up in the next one year, with a generation capacity of 15,000 MW. On an average, setting up one megawatt of coal based electricity costs Rs 5-6 crore. The available coal would only be able to generate 3,000 MW of electricity during the year- a huge shortage.
It is clear that the energy situation is in a precarious state today.
The role of the BEE
The Bureau of Energy Efficiency(BEE) was set up by the Government of India on 1st Match 2002, under the provisions of the Energy Conservation Act, 2001. The stated mission of the BEE is to assist in developing policies and strategies with a thrust on self-regulation and market principles. The primary objective of the BEE is to reduce energy intensity of the Indian economy. This is sought to be achieved through the active participation of all the stakeholders, resulting in accelerated and sustained adoption of energy efficiency in all sectors.
The world has been estimated to consume 20,000 billion KWH of electricity in 2010. This is expected to increase to 30,000 billion KWH by 2030, with significant demand from emerging economies like India and China. In a recent seminar, the Deputy Director General of BEE highlighted the significant role that ICT can play in energy efficiency in India. Two way communication facilitated by ICT will enable supply chain load transformation, load response, and other features. Companies can also look at smart meter reading devices, which could in turn lead to building up a smarter grid.
The role that companies like ConnectM are playing
It is not difficult to conclude that the importance of energy in our lives is a non negotiable fact. The other fact also is that the energy resources across the world are fast depleting. Several companies who are in a position to contribute towards energy conservation or energy optimization have done so in their own ways.
Some companies have dedicated CSR programs focussed at conserving these resources, while other companies have been fortunate enough to be able to integrate this desire into the DNA of the company via developing a solution or product that aids in energy conservation.
ConnectM is one such company wherein every solution that we have is contributing in a large or small way towards energy optimization. The ConnectM Energy Management Solution helps in optimizing the usage of energy in commercial spaces while the Remote Monitoring & Diagnostics solution in the Telecom space, Construction Industry and Industrial set up, focuses primarily on reducing and optimising fuel and energy consumption. The Business Analytics arm of ConnectM focuses on gathering data from the field and interpreting it into actionable results, thereby allowing the user to peek into consumption patterns in the past, learn from them and implement steps to improve efficiency going forward. ‘Go Green – With ConnectM’ is not just a line but a promise we make to everyone who decides to partner with us!
